BK-31 armored boat raised from the bottom of the Volga river
BK-31 – an armored boat of the Volga military flotilla, which took part in the Battle of Stalingrad.
From July 24 to December 17, 1942, the BK-31 took part in the defense of Stalingrad in the second division of the Volga Military Flotilla.
BK-31 was hit by enemy forces in 1942 near the island of Hungry during the Battle of Stalingrad. According to the memoirs of a German officer, the BK-31 team fought to the last. This is confirmed by workers who examined the armored boat after lifting. The lever was turned on “full speed ahead”, and the remains of two people were found next to the machine gun.
According to preliminary information from the military archives, 13 people were on the boat at the time of its death. The captain BK-31 died as a result of the explosion, 5 sailors were injured, the rest managed to escape.
Two years ago, a diver accidentally found abandoned boat BK-31. The ship was covered with sand. During the two weeks of preparatory work, the divers lifted several rifles, a machine gun, a soldier’s helmet, charred boots and other personal belongings of the soldiers from the boat.
Today, BK-31 is installed on the embankment of the Volga River. It will not stand in the open air, but will be placed in a special rectangular sarcophagus. Inside will be a modern highlight of all the “injuries” of the armored boat. The government wants to leave the armored boat as it is – with wooden stubs, by means of which the soldiers boarded up the holes in 1942. The only thing is that the boat will be coated with a primer so that it does not collapse due to effects of the environment. A backlight will show that the crew until the last fought for the life of the ship.
For the heroism shown in the defense of the city, the division was awarded with the guard rank.
