German propaganda grenades
Leaflets of the Third Reich for the USSR – propaganda materials designed by Nazi Germany for the Soviet Union. Propaganda leaflets of various contents were distributed, often using the forces of the Luftwaffe, both in the USSR and in most countries participating in the anti-Hitler coalition.
A digger Alexander Zakharov managed to find German barreled propaganda grenades on the former battlefield. But out of the whole found heap, only 4 pieces turned out to be full, some were rotten, some were broken, because someone found them before him and tried to open them, someone out of ignorance spoiled three pieces (maybe they were already empty).
One part of the grenades was heated, as there were forest fires before, and there are a lot of evidences for this. After opening some grenades, ash was waiting for him inside.
Only in one grenade there were the flyers in good condition (pictured below).
In the early years of the war, propaganda distribution of leaflets was carried out by the Wehrmacht in order to encourage Red Army soldiers to get a “life-saving” status of Soviet prisoners of war or to desert, later it was proposed to replenish the ranks of collaborationist groups, such as ROA (The Russian Liberation Army). The result of agitation primarily depended on the severity of the military situation.
