“How many soldiers died along the roads. Who counted, who counted … “
The All-Ukrainian expedition Barvenkovsky Kotel-1942 took place in the fall of 2017, and it yielded excellent results: the Union of People’s Memory found the remains of 43 soldiers, over 10 days. But, as we well know, this is only a tiny fraction of those who perished here. This is the tail of a subsequence search in the same area:
Last weekend, Kharkov search teams found the remains of 10 Red Army soldiers. They were buried at a depth of 70 cm, neatly folded with a “jack.” We were able to identify them as Red Army soldiers because of their boots. After that, we spent exhumation the soldiers who were in the grave.
Searches also found the following items near the burial site: a box of tooth powder (1), a gas mask kit with a degasser bottle and a box with spare lenses (2), a universal cartridge pouch from SVT-38/40 (3), a fragment of a medical flask ( 4), a dangerous razor (5), a fragment of the mouthpiece (6), buttons from underwear.
The most significant find was a personal identification mark (PIM), which the researchers identified during the clearing of the remains under number 8. His name was Kornienko Sergey Ilyich (born in 1913, a native of the village of Ekaterinovka of the Salsky district of the Rostov region). The search for relatives of the fighter is being conducted.
