Soldiers’ grave was found based on photos in 1942 from the place of execution
Leaning to a photograph from the place of execution of Soviet soldiers by the Wehrmacht servicemen, historians from the city of Murmansk found the grave of soldiers from the photos published below.
These photos rocked the internet a few years ago. The Germans shoot two defenders of the Rybachy Peninsula in the Arctic.
In the last minutes of his life, a Soviet soldier proudly raised his head and looked down at the Wehrmacht soldiers. With his hands on his hips, he looks with hatred at his executioners. Another Soviet soldier in an overcoat is standing next to him. Murmansk history buffs drew attention to the noticeable huge stones at which Soviet soldiers were shot and decided to try to find this place.
“There is a very conspicuous stone in the pictures. I figured that in several decades it could hardly crumble. At what height in the foothills of the Musta-Tunturi ridge the Red Army soldiers were executed, I roughly understood from the documents, ”- said later Pavel Vaigin, the initiator of the search, from Murmansk.
The trace of those events
Translator Dmitry Dulich reread almost all available documents and found a trace of those events:
“It was the end of June 1941, the Germans had just crossed the border in this sector of the front. At an altitude of 122 meters, our soldiers captured an enemy reconnaissance group and killed in front of the Germans watching through binoculars. Only one escaped by jumping into the lake from a cliff. At night, the mountain riflemans took the height by storm. The resistance of the Red Army was fierce – in that battle, the company of Jaegers under the command of Chief Lieutenant Rode lost more people than in the entire Polish campaign. The Germans shot the surviving fighters, having arranged lynching before this. By order of the commander, one of the mountain shooters was filming what was happening, and the other kept the protocol. The Red Army men were executed because they hated the enemy, were fiercer and braver. “
An expedition of historians and ethnographers repeated all 80 kilometers of the route of the 2nd Wehrmacht Mountain Rifle Division before finding the place of execution. The stone practically did not change, only a piece broke off. Nearby there are thickets of Ivan-tea, a sure sign that a person died in this place.
Here they found scraps of an overcoat, a purse, an army belt and one medallion, the note of which read: “Korolkov Sergey Makarovich.”
This is the fighter on the right in the greatcoat. 70 years before Murmansk searchers found him, a letter arrived in his village of Bolotovo, Tver Region, informing his family about the death of their relative. Now his daughter, six grandchildren and great-grandchildren live there.
After the name became known, journalists from local newspapers joined the search. The correspondent of the newspaper “Argumenty i Fakty” found the daughter of the deceased Red Army soldier.
“I don’t remember him – I was one and a half years old when my father went to war. But I know my father well from my mother’s stories. She loved her husband and never married again. After the war, we lived together, ”said Nina Krylova.
Her mother never married again, despite the “notification of the death of her husband,” she waited until the end of her life that her husband was alive, would find them and knock on the door.
