ВВС: Israeli divers found a treasure of gold coins
According to this BBC article: Israeli scuba divers exploring the bay of Caesarea happened upon a cache of what they thought were toy coins, but they quickly realized that it really could be an ancient treasure.
They reported the find to professional divers from the Department of Marine Archeology of the Israeli Antiquities Authority. The Government Administration of Antiquities announced that:
*The department’s experts, who arrived at the place of discovery with metal detectors, found about two thousand gold coins of various denominations circulating at one time in the Fatimid caliphate.

This medieval Arab state was headquartered in Cairo, and its territories consisted of Egypt, the Maghreb, Palestine and Syria. They absolutely dominated North Africa from 909 to 1171.
Director of the Department of Marine Archeology, Kobe Sharvit, said that archaeological excavations will be carried out at the site, hoping that any additional finds will help shed light on the origin of the treasure.
“Perhaps there was a shipwreck of a treasury ship heading to Cairo with the collected taxes,” he suggested. “Perhaps, these coins were supposed to be paid to the military garrison stationed in Caesarea and protecting the city.”
According to another theory, gold belonged to the owners of a large merchant ship carrying goods to local coastal cities and ports.
