Waffen SS soldier M42 helmet (+8 photos)
This very rare M42 helmet was found quite recently with a metal detector on the territory of Western Ukraine. The relic is perfectly preserved and has already been sold for a fairly large sum to one of the major collectors of relics of the Second World War. But the rarity of this helmet is not that its condition is excellent, but that it has Waffen SS decals (by the way, they are also in excellent condition).
M42 helmet before restoration and why is it so rare?
The first M42 helmets were produced on August 1, 1942. From the previous M40, the new M42 externally differed only in flanges, which no longer rolled inside the helmet, but after stamping remained practically unprocessed, bent out (flanged). Another difference, invisible to the eye, was much more important: the composition of steel has changed, now it has ceased to be alloyed.
The Waffen SS decal could be seen even on a still dirty helmet.
According to the author of the find, Beorn: “After some place in the same place where these relics were found (also with the help of a metal detector), a beautiful M42 helmet was raised to the ground, and it was a helmet of SS troops. We found many more helmets there, but they did not deserve attention compared to this instance. The helmet was sold at auction, I am very sorry now that this rare M42 helmet is not in my collection. “
Despite the fact that this helmet lay in the ground for more than 70 years, it was only enough to wash it with hot water to see that 70% of its original paint was preserved. This gave a chance that it would be possible to save 100 percent of the helmet’s native paint from under the rust that had formed on it (which happens very rarely).
Usually, from our experience, I can say that because the M42 helmet was made of a very thin sheet of metal, these specimens were always very poorly preserved in the ground and rotted in the first 30 years after the war. Therefore, even with such a wonderful helmet in an unwashed state, there were doubts about whether it would be possible to save it.
M42 helmet after restoration
After a complete cleaning of the helmet from rust and any plaque adhered to this relic of the Second World War for more than 70 years in the ground, we managed to get the most beautiful copy for any collector. See the result in the photo.
One of the most popular helmets
The helmet of the 1942 model (M42) is the most common of all German army helmets used during the Second World War. This is primarily due to the fact that the release of M42 was carried out from 1942 to 1945, while most of the helmets of the early models were lost during the fighting. For this reason, currently, of the entire “model range” of German helmets during the Second World War, the M42 model is the most common.
